What does a pediatric nutritionist do?
A pediatric nutritionist looks at your child’s growth, appetite, food likes and dislikes, routine and activity, then helps you plan meals and snacks that give them the nutrients they need to grow, learn and play. Good nutrition in childhood supports healthy bones and muscles, brain development and focus, a strong immune system and eating habits that last a lifetime.
Working with a kids dietitian is different from following a generic diet chart. Your child’s plan uses the food already cooked at home, fits their school and activity schedule, and introduces new foods gradually, so healthy eating feels normal rather than forced.
Smart strategies for kid-friendly nutrition
- Colourful plates: offer a range of fruits and vegetables and make meals fun, with shapes, colours and small portions.
- Add, don’t hide too much: mix vegetables into favourites like palak paratha, vegetable dosa, carrot idli or vegetable pulao.
- Better snacks: swap chips and biscuits for fruit, curd, roasted chana, makhana, sprouts and homemade ladoos.
- Balanced breakfasts: poha with peanuts, idli with sambar, eggs with toast or a vegetable paratha with curd.
- Water and milk first: keep sugary drinks and packaged juices as occasional treats.
- Involve kids and eat together: let them help wash vegetables or choose a fruit, and enjoy meals together without screens.

Frequently asked questions
What does a pediatric Dietitian & Nutritionist do?
A pediatric Dietitian & Nutritionist helps children eat a balanced diet for healthy growth, energy, focus and immunity. They assess your child’s growth, eating habits and routine, then give parents a practical, child-friendly plan for meals, snacks and lunch boxes, including for picky eating and weight concerns.
When should my child see a nutritionist?
Consider it if your child is a very picky eater, is underweight or overweight for their age, is not growing well, has low energy or falls sick often, or eats very few healthy foods.
How can I get my picky eater to eat vegetables?
Offer small portions of a new food alongside familiar ones, many times without pressure; children often need to try a food 10 or more times before they accept it. Add vegetables to dishes they already like, such as parathas, dosas and pasta, involve them in cooking and keep mealtimes calm.
My child is underweight. How can I help them gain weight?
Offer three meals and two to three snacks a day with energy-dense home foods such as milk, curd, paneer, eggs, banana, nut powders, ghee in sensible amounts and whole grains. Avoid filling up on juice or packaged snacks before meals. See our weight gain programme.
My child is overweight. Should they go on a diet?
No. Strict diets are not recommended for children. The focus is on healthier family habits: regular meals, more vegetables and fruit, fewer sugary drinks and packaged snacks, less screen time and more active play, so your child grows into a healthier weight.
What are healthy snacks for school lunch boxes?
Easy options include vegetable paratha with curd, idli or dosa, poha or upma with vegetables, sprouts chaat, paneer or egg sandwiches on whole-grain bread, fruit, roasted makhana and nuts if the school allows them.
Does my child need health drinks or supplements?
Most children who eat a balanced diet do not need health drinks, and many contain added sugar. Supplements such as iron or vitamin D should be given only if your doctor finds a deficiency.
How can I improve my child’s immunity through food?
There is no single superfood. A varied diet with fruits, vegetables, protein, curd and whole grains, along with enough sleep, outdoor play and fewer sugary foods, supports a healthy immune system.
Do you help teenagers with nutrition?
Yes. We help teenagers with growth spurts, sports nutrition, healthy weight, skin, exam-time eating and, for girls, periods and PMOS (PCOS), with plans that fit school and coaching schedules.
